From Gujarati Films To Global Recognition: Alpana Buch Credits Anupamaa For Her Massive Fame

Mumbai: Actress Alpana Buch, who essays the much-loved character of Leela Ba in Anupamaa, says the show has transformed her life in unimaginable ways. Produced by Deepa Shahi and Rajan Shahi, the show has not only made her a household name in India but has also earned her recognition across the globe.

Opening up about the overwhelming popularity she enjoys today, Alpana says, “It’s such a popular show and naturally the love keeps growing. People already knew me through theatre and Gujarati films, but Anupamaa gave me a completely new identity as Leela Ba. Today, audiences in countries like the UK and the USA recognize me as Ba. Leela Ba has truly become a universal Ba, and that feels incredibly special.”

The actress adds that audience appreciation remains the biggest reward for any performer. “Awards may come and go, but the love of the audience is everything. An actor is incomplete without viewers. They are our strength, our confidence, and our biggest support system. Without them, we are nothing,” she shares emotionally.

Alpana also recalls how her family sensed the show’s success right from the beginning. “My husband, who is also an actor, watched the very first episode and immediately told me, ‘Get ready because this show is going to be a massive hit.’ Even my daughter felt extremely proud seeing me in Anupamaa,” she says.

Talking about emotionally challenging scenes, Alpana remembers a recent track involving financial struggles within the Shah family. “There was a scene where Bapuji was selling incense sticks on the streets while I had gone to cook at someone’s house. That sequence stayed with me deeply because it reflected how difficult life can become for elderly people facing financial hardships. It was emotionally exhausting to perform,” she reveals.

Having portrayed Leela Ba for six years now, Alpana says the character has become an inseparable part of her identity. “The moment I wear Leela’s costume, hairstyle, and makeup, she automatically comes alive within me. Her body language and the way she speaks have become second nature to me now,” she says.

Despite the hectic shooting schedule, the actress enjoys spending her free time quietly. “Whenever I’m not shooting, I prefer sitting in my room with the lights off while watching web series or films on Netflix and Amazon Prime. That’s my favourite way to unwind,” she shares with a smile.

She also treasures the warm bond she shares with her co-stars and crew members on set. “Our lunch table is the happiest corner on the set. Rupali Ganguly, members of the direction team, and a few of us sit together, share home-cooked food, and talk about everything from college memories and family conversations to fashion, politics, and life. Those moments are truly priceless,” Alpana concludes.
